Cederberg Duiwelsgat to Dwarsrivier Trail Run

Cederberg: Duiwelsgat to Dwarsrivier Trail Run

Adventure Races are not always fun - the reasons we do them are complicated and often bring us to question our own sanity but that's a discussion for another time. One of the major pros of the sport is that the training IS fun. In fact, we only use the word "training" in an attempt to make what is really just playtime sound more legitimate.

If you're also in to trail running and love wide open spaces then you should definitely put this run on your list! It's approximately 28 km with 1000 m of climbing and takes 4 hours for a fit group (with a few stops to look at flowers, take photos and examine leopard scat).

It starts on the Uitkyk pass a few kilometers north of Algeria in the Cederberg (2h30 drive from Cape Town). The first few kilometers are hard work but the reward in the form of beautiful runnable trail on a slightly downward gradient is worth it ten times over. Not to mention the clear mountain streams, unworldly rock features, stunning views over deep shear-sided kloofs, and the ancient ceder trees.

Keep your eyes peeled for the elusive Cape Leopard, and while you're at it you'll probably spot dassies, klipspringer, jackal buzzards and black eagles.

It's all down hill once you pass the iconic Maltese Cross; a steep fun technical descent that gets you to the car park at the bottom in no time! The few kilometers along the road back to Dwarsrivier or the Sandrif campsite are much less fun but beautiful none-the-less (although being collected at the Maltese Cross parking might be the best plan).
